Your Ultimate Guide to Portland, Oregon: Affordable, Ethical & Full of Local Gems

Portland is one of those cities that just gets me. It’s weird (in the best way), packed with delicious food, overflowing with independent shops and small businesses, and has nature right in its backyard. Every time I visit, I find something new to love, and I’m here to share my favorite spots and tips so you can experience the best of PDX—without spending a fortune.

Budget-Friendly & Ethical Travel Tips

🌿 Use Public Transit

Portland’s public transit system is super affordable, easy to navigate, and eco-friendly. We used the buses almost daily, and between those, the MAX light rail, and the streetcars, you can get pretty much anywhere for just a few bucks. Portland is also very walkable and bike-friendly, so if you’re down for a scenic stroll or bike ride, take advantage of the city’s pedestrian-friendly layout.

🍽️ Eat at Food Truck Pods (and Bring Your Friends!)

Portland is the food truck capital of the world, and its food truck pods are an affordable (and delicious) way to sample tons of different cuisines in one spot. Bring some friends, grab a dish or two from multiple vendors, and share—you’ll get so much variety for way less money than a sit-down restaurant.

🎮 Look for Local Deals & Discount Days

If you time it right, you can save a ton of money just by knowing when to go. We found out that QuarterWorld Arcade offers 25-cent games on Wednesdays, which meant I played all night for just $10. Restaurants also host specialty food weeks like Sandwich Week, Pizza Week, and Burger Week, where you can score amazing dishes at a steep discount (we’re talking gourmet sandwiches for like $5). Keep an eye on local event calendars to eat well on a budget.

🌲 Take a Day Trip into the Wilderness

One of the best things about Portland? Nature is right there. If you’ve got a car (or can rent one for a couple of days), I highly recommend taking a day or weekend trip to the Oregon Coast or the mountains. Lincoln City is one of my all-time favorite getaways—small-town charm, bookshops, thrift stores, ocean views, and hiking trails all in one place.

My Favorite Places in Portland

📍 QuarterWorld Arcade

A retro-meets-modern arcade with pinball machines, classic video games, and even a giant animatronic Tesla coil that does lightning bolt shows. Bonus points for their Wednesday deal where all games are just a quarter each!

📍 The Oregon Zoo

If you’re an animal lover, the Oregon Zoo is a must-see. They’re big on conservation and animal welfare, and their exhibits showcase everything from Pacific Northwest wildlife to endangered species. Also, if you love elephants (hi, it’s me), this zoo has one of the best elephant habitats in the country, and a new baby, Tula Tu, was just born.

📍 Fressen German Bakery

An authentic German bakery with some of the best pastries in Portland. Think pretzels, strudels, dark rye bread, and more—all handmade with traditional techniques.

📍 Hinterland Coffee

A queer-owned, cozy coffee shop with delicious drinks, great ambiance, and an overall warm, welcoming vibe. Perfect for getting some work done, reading a book, or just chilling out.

📍 Citrine Bloom

A small artist-run gift shop filled with locally made goods, prints, jewelry, and unique home decor. If you love supporting independent artists and makers, this is the place to shop.

📍 Village Merchants Thrift Store

One of the best thrift stores I’ve ever been to (and trust me, I’ve been to a lot). It’s well-organized, affordable, and full of cool vintage and secondhand finds. Bonus: they’re all about sustainability and giving old items new life.

📍 Academy Movie Theater

A historic theater with cheap tickets, comfy seating, and great food. They screen everything from cult classics to new indie films, and their concessions are actually good— housemade pizza, and kombucha on tap.

📍 Powell’s City of Books

Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but Powell’s is iconic for a reason. It’s the largest independent bookstore in the world, and you could easily spend hours getting lost in its endless shelves of books. If you love indie authors, zines, or unique finds, make sure to check out their rare book room.

📍 MamaDút

A Vietnamese vegan restaurant that will make you forget you’re eating plant-based. Their bánh mì and vegan pork belly are legendary, and even if you’re not vegan, it’s 1000% worth a visit.

📍 The Bins (Goodwill Outlet)

Not your average thrift store—this is thrifting in its most chaotic, treasure-hunting glory. Items are sold by the pound, and you never know what you’re going to find. If you’re patient and love a good dig-through-the-piles adventure, you can score incredible vintage, designer, and one-of-a-kind pieces for dirt cheap. Pro tip: bring gloves and go early for the best finds.

Plan Your Portland Adventure!

Portland is full of great food, incredible thrift stores, stunning nature, and tons of affordable adventures. Whether you’re exploring the city, eating your way through food truck pods, or escaping to the coast, there’s something here for everyone.
